Blaenafon Triathlon for the Peter Johnson Memorial Trophy

Well things have changed a little for the Blaenafon Triathlon since our pool here in Blaenafon was closed due to roof damage. Alas the pool, after seventy years of use, has now become the site of a school.

Other changes for the triathlon has seen event founder Dr Gareth Buffett hand over the reigns to N.E.W.T - the Newport and East Wales Triathlon club, who helped run the event for a few years. The event has since been adopted by Y-Fenni Triathlon Club, and is set to evolve yet again.

So what has the Blaenafon Triathlon in store for you in this new era? Well, thought was given to using the Blaenafon leisure lakes but this was turned down, so that left neighbouring pools as the only real alternative, of which Pontypool seemed the best choice as we are still able to use the bulk of the traditional cycle route. The concept therefore remains the same with lots of hills both on the cycle and run, as competitors from 2008 (the first running of the event in this guise) will no doubt testify to. Minor roads are mostly used for the cycle route and paths for the run.

The event is based at Pontypool Leisure Centre MR Sheet171 286 007 which is about fifteen minutes from Junction 26 or 25A of the M4 and the same from A40 dual carriageway at Abergavenny.
